I can't even believe that this topic is such a BIG deal! Let me ask a question to those of you girls who think it is okay to flaunt your breasts in a bikini or see through shirt...how is that different from a woman breastfeeding? ANSWER: one is for fun and attention (obvious) and the other is to nourish a child. Americans are twisted in their views and this topic has become SOOOO twisted. Ewww gross...lets not feed our babies in public from the breast but lets see how much flesh I can show. Men, you might think breastfeeding is gross or whatever, but you get all excited to see a woman's breast in public and think it is great in a sexual kind of way.
My soapbox for this subject is very big! Breastfeeding in other cultures is so entirely different than our culture. Other cultures breastfeed longer and in public and it is not a big deal. I am a big advocate of breastfeeding...it doesn't cost money, it is available at all times, never needs heating and in case of national disaster a mom can breastfeed her entire family and drink the water/juice for herself...thus keeping the family healthier. Yeah, it might not be conventional and appear gross to others but what is more important? Health or illness?
I think of all those little babies in New Orleans during Katrina and the moms who were worried about feeding their babies. Some were newborns...did not those mothers even think to put their baby to the breast to SAVE that baby from dehydration? Or to put her toddlers to the breast as well? But instead she sat their and complained that she had no formual, etc. HELLO! At nine days, the mother can still produce milk...at nine days from giving birth there is milk!!! GRRRR! Irritates me and then the American public asks questions like this.
Think of how much money can be saved and how the environment can be saved by NOT using formula...WOW!!! Put formula companies out of business. Formula is a waste and should not be used but in carefully medically documented cases of inability to produce milk and other circumstances that would require formula. Formula should be by prescription only. Most every female produces milk...duh!!! That is why there are mammary glands. Your milk is not water and it does not dry up. Educate yourselves, mothers and mothers to be. And give your babies that liquid gold!!!! Even in public. And who cares what other people think of you feeding your child in public? It is YOUR child, YOUR right and YOUR body!!! If anyone disagrees, tell them to eat their food while sitting on a nasty toilet in a just as nasty bathroom because it offends you to have them even question you about feeding your baby in public.
there is a time and a place. i was a breastfeeding mother and i did feed my baby, when necessary, in public. however, i didn't put on a show. i tried to be discreet and out of the way. i have been offended by mothers who "show off" while breastfeeding. there is definately a way to feed your child and not expose or offend the public. so many public places are offering mother rooms, and i think it's awesome!
Breast feeding in public should be considered normal under certain circumstances. The baby has to eat, and it is necesary. But it is also important to be aware of others and cover up so as not to make anyone uncomfortable. I have breastfed all my children, and have always kept extremely modest...but there are still those that give dirty looks. Breastfeeding is is not comparible to sex, or going to the bathroom. The baby is eating!!! Like you eat...you wouldn't go somehwere to eat and take your food in the bathroom, would you?
I don't care if mothers breast feed in public. But, I laugh that they are so worried about making the whole thing private but yet they do it in public. That's a double standard. They don't want people to watch their babies feeding, or want people to see their breasts, but yet they want to do all this in public. Makes no sense. Why not use a bottle in public . . . pump before going out, and breast feed in a more private setting.
just for you
